Milky Way and Dark Skies Guided View

Bring your flashlight and meet at the pier of Sugar Pine Point State Park for a FREE guided view of the beautiful night sky in Lake Tahoe. Each family will receive a free chart of the stars and guidance to find the great Summer Triangle of stars and the Milky Way. Learn how to tell time by the location of the stars and the Big Dipper and marvel at the Zodiac constellations of the Scorpion and the Archer. This event is free for all!

Conversation with History

Join us for a special evening at Emerald Bay State Park and the incomparable Vikingsholm castle. Following a unique tour, guests will enjoy wine and hors d’oeuvres in the courtyard of Vikingsholm. Helen Smith will host an informal conversation about her experiences spending 14 summers at Vikingsholm as a guest of Lora Knight, the owner. Smith will present a signed copy of her book “Vikingsholm”, a guide she authored, to every guest.Guests will meet at DL Bliss State Park at 5pm to drive into Emerald Bay. Seating is limited and reservations are required.Tickets are $65 per person ($60 with SSPF membership).

Moon and Bright Stars Guided Hike

The whole family is invited to bring their flashlights and binoculars as we go star and moon gazing. Each family will receive a free chart for guidance to find named craters and “seas” of the moon. We will learn about the phases of the moon and its history. Each family will also receive a chart of the stars and guidance to find the great Summer Triangle of stars, the North Star, and some of the stars of the Zodiac. Meet at the pier of Sugar Pine Point State Park.

Guided Tree Identification Hike

From 10 a.m. to noon enjoy our guided tour for identifying tree species of the Sugar Pine Point State Park. Participants will meet at the picnic tables next to the Nature Center. Discover details by hands-on touching the cones, needles and bark of the Sugar Pine, Jeffrey Pine, Lodgepole Pine, Incense Cedar, Red Fir, and other great trees. Learn about the human uses of these trees, the ever changing patterns of the forests, and the impacts of fire. Participants will also learn how to use the Nature Center as a resource for future explorations.

Park Champions at Emerald Bay State Park

The Sierra State Parks Foundation is excited to partner with Park Champions this summer to bring new volunteer opportunities to our Sierra State Parks. Help restore the historic native plant garden at Vikingsholm. Remove invasive plants and clear the garden area for planting native species. Note: Access to the work site is via a steep one mile trail. Ages 10 and up welcome with a legal guardian. Tools, training, smiles and lunch provided. Volunteers must register at www.calparks.org/park-champions/ to ensure we have the right amount of tools and lunches.

Music in the Castle

Violinist Mr. John Metros will join Concert Pianist Dr. David Nelson with guest musicians for a very special concert to be held inside Vikingsholm featuring Scandinavian music themes. The concert features the custom 6-legged Steinway piano, commissioned by the home’s original owner in 1929. Guests will meet at D.L. Bliss State Park and drive into Emerald Bay. A wine and hors d’oeuvres reception follows the concert, making for a memorable evening. Tickets are $100. Reservations are required due to limited seating.
